Our scorecard has been updated this year for easier viewing online and printing (will fit nicely on 8 1/2 by 11 - saving paper!)
The Challenge requires participants to complete sustainability strategies from a scorecard that contains categories of outreach, energy reduction, indoor environmental quality, waste reduction, and clean transportation options. Each sustainability strategy is worth a specific number of points, with total points in each category listed below:
Outreach - contains actions to build green teams, internal and external communication about sustainable strategies, purchasing policies & partnerships = 75 total points
Energy - actions to conserve energy in lighting, heating and office equipment, as well as the use of renewable energy = 66 total points
Indoor Environmental Quality - actions to improve room temperature, air quality, green products and storage = 31 total points
Waste - actions to improve waste & paper reduction and to increase the recycling of office materials, food service and electronics = 68 total points
Water - actions to promote water conservation, stormwater management and sustainable landscaping = 16 total points
Transportation - actions to promote workplace commuting, designated carpool parking, bicycle commuting and business travel = 31 total points
Baseline Score due March 29, 2013
The Baseline score documents the sustainable business practices that your company accomplished prior to the Challenge.
Final Score due October 29, 2013
Final score marks company sustainability improvements over the Challenge timeframe.
The final score minus the baseline score decides company improvement during the St. Louis Green Business Challenge. At the end of the year Award Ceremony, each Challenge participating team receive an award to recognize these achievements and improvements.
*Note: With the updated scorecard you will notice on the last page under category sub-scores that each cateogry will auto sum as long as the baseline or final score totals are documented.
Owner or Tenant? - Make sure to list on the front page of the scorecard if your company is an owner or tenant on the space provided.
Owner has control over building modifications to the energy, water, landscaping and building features.
Tenant depends on a property owner to make improvements to the workplace in terms of energy, water, landscaping and building features.
The last section of the scorecard tallies up innovation points, actions that are not listed on the scorecard but are considered sustainable achievements with your company. Some examples are listed below from companies in the 2012 Challenge, or click here to view the Innovations and Achievements booklet for additional examples:
1 point Innovation - Exemplary internal measure in pilot phase or fully implemented exemplary measure having internal (company-only) impact. Examples from past Challenge participants - see Accomplishments and Innovations booklet below for more information:
- Energy audit conducted (Saint Louis Zoo)
- Utilize existing embroidery thread colors for new product designs rather than purchase new colors of threads (Global Products)
- Classified documents diverted for off-site commercial composting ( approximately 50 tons/yr. diverted from landfill) (Boeing)
- “Drink Green” Initiative - Decided to stop purchasing disposable drink ware all together. Instead, have made available to all employees a ceramic mug which were leftover from a previous marketing effort at one of our developments as well as purchased a more environmentally friendly tumbler for each employee. (Lawrence Group)
2 point Innovation - Pilot project with external benefits beyond the company. Examples from past Challenge participants
- Installation of a cool roof (Cannon Design)
- Added a Kegerator and glasses to offices to reduce waste during design reviews and Friday happy hours. (Christner)
- Submitted a proposal to refocus Environmental Sustainability as part of the firm's values and culture…also created a 5-year plan, objectives, and approach to accomplish. (Edward Jones)
- The custodial program uses a daytime cleaning model to limit after-hours energy consumption. (Wells Fargo Advisors and Lawrence Group)
3 point Innovation - Fully implemented exemplary measure across the company with conservation and education ramifications beyond company operations. Examples from past Challenge particpants
- Sustainability awareness campaign through social media and blogging (Brightergy)
- Conducted the low carbon diet program for employees to go green at home (Jacobs)
- Metro has partnered with TrailNet to create bike paths and green paths through the region (Metro)
- Soft plastic recycling program – Save –A-Lot food stores found that soft plastic can generate revenue through recycling, therefore implemented a recycling program for all of their soft plastic. 300 stores recycled over 650,000lbs of soft plastic in six months reducing the pick-up frequency and dumpster size equaling a 30% annual dumpster expense savings overall saving the company a half a million dollars in overhead costs annually.
